She's just very intelligent and sometimes stares off in that way cats do when they can see ghosts.

Haven't you ever seen them stare off at nothing in the stairwell or a seemingly empty room?
And then flick their ears as if listening and tilt their head to watch something unseen move past?

Clearly following something
Staring at nothing tends to be more of a slack-jawed spacing out.
I've never really seen a cat do that. That's more of a dog thing, and usually only if they're tired.
